Advertisements on the web cam.

What a shock to discover ADVERTISEMENTS on the Africam web cam today.  This new feature has certainly made viewing the waterhole an annoying experience.  I don't like it and I will make it a point NOT to visit the advertised sites.  Thank you AFRICAM for ruining what used to be a pleasant experience. ____________________________

Im with you dave, its not something you expect from africam.. i dont know whats changed at admin but it isnt for the best. And is driving most of the long termers away.. its getting sad....        its such a shame to see commercialism take over ..

i would of hoped if they became this hard up that would ask us members for help direct.. rather than this deep act of betrayel (yes i do feel betrayed).

but what can we do i have been following the threads and they dont seem to care. they havent even  been helping when people have trouble with flash. members had to help me, not that they could, my pc is too old...

i have this sad feeling in my heart that ten yr's of africaming is about to come to an end for me . i really hope NOT Sad:(Sad

We are trying to find a less intrusive means to serve the ads and are testing the overlays. The break between ads can be adjusted and we wanted to get feedback from the viewers comparing the mid rolls against the overlay ads.

there has to be a certain amount of commercialism on the site to keep things running and pay for new cameras and features. We are trying to find the right balance and need your feedback like this. we are a small team and are working around the clock to get many new things up and running smoothly. We appreciate our long time viewers and will find a solution that works.

I, for one, find it pretty annoying when someone who has never posted before, never been involved in any POSITIVE way with forum discussions, takes it upon themselves to come on here and sound off about all that is wrong with Africam.

But, free speech is still very much a part of things, here.  I would, however, suggest that  everyone try and be part of the solutions, rather than part of the problem.

Just my humble opinion.

We really don't mind the  no voice overlay ads. They are better than the mid roll ads.  Thanks

Well Sir, I've posted hundreds of times under a different name before the forum switched.  I've enjoyed the webcam for many years and it's a pity that you're annoyed but that's life.

Flame elsewhere.

I agree LostinOz.  They could configure the viewer to have additional space below where the Ad could show but not be in the viewing area itself.  The Ad could then be cropped out after a screenshot or video was created.

Change for some people is never good.  I for one am just happy that I can have the privilege due to other hard work to whatch and enjoy Africam for free.  How can you complain about something that you have offered to you for nothing! I like the new overlay I can still see the action better then the screen changing to an ad.  Yes I would like more time in between ads. Above all Thank you Africam for all you do forus

very true change does spook me... but as for the free thing i must dispute it slightly , U see places like this exist because of u not dispite you.. its our coming here that gets them revenue, its our refferals that bring the countless visitors, its the holidays you and your friends buy at the various lodges that makes it viable for them to want to run a cam, so all in all there wouldnt be an africam without visitors....   after all it is a giant ad for africa.... but the best ad ever made :)  i must admit........

Now just a quick mention on why i like the live feeling.    because if it doesnt feel live i may as well go watch a attenborough special where i might actually learn something . the reality is there are hundreds of thousands of hours of africa that have been filmed  and the thing that distinguishes africam from them,  is that it is LIVE....so it is important to me to retain that feeling...

i love africam and im hoping that everything meets a balance soon.. thanks everyone for putting in your opinions/feelings, its great to have such a varied community and i hope u all have a great day.. LostInOz(paul)

A thought occured to me that maybe.... you could do less accomodating ad stuff on the page which is accessable to all and maybe do more accomodating ads  in the pop ups that only members can access. i hope u understand what i mean

it might also increase membership too then . anyway just an idea have a good day/night all

LostInOz(paul) p.s as i look down i see 20 members online and 310 guests

Paul - the first time I read this, i read the exact opposite to what you meant, but I've got it straight now.  LOL  There was once a scheme being discussed where one could have a paid, ad-free subscription, for some nominal fee, say $10. or $20. a month.  Perhaps your suggestion could be folded into that.  Visitors seeing all the adds, members getting less ads, and paid subscribers getting none at all.

What say to that, Africam?

I was a member of Wavelit before Africam.com had the Waterhole webcam.  They did charge a fee which I believe was around $4.00.  One would think an avid member as yourself would have know that.

Once we have found the best combination and means of serving the ads we will launch an AFS (Ads Free Service). The first step is to get the Free Ads service running and then the AFS. We know that the AFS will be perfect for the people who donate money and will then have an ads free live feed. It will in effect be a monthly subsciption.

We are working hard and will hopefully have this option soon.

enjoy.

thats an excellent idea especially for those that cant afford it. Aleast be a member! Once the paid subscription goes so will lots of people that wont beable to afford it. They will go to other cams that are free. The idea here is for the money but when you dont have the visitors you wont get the money!

HI,

I just wanted to say that I would like people to stop crying about the ads

The is a free sight not to mention the best sight on the internet and they need to make money to keep this sight running

I personally do not care about the ads and I just want to thank everyone at Africam who work 24 hours a day to give us the best entertainment on the internet and I hope that they are not offended with these bullxxxx comments

I would also like to personally apologize to anyone at Africam if you offended or hurt by these comments and I hope you keep doing a great job because I know you will

Well everyone at Africam I want to thank you again for everything you do fo us everyday

Hey Edspub, Thanx so much for this. Comments like this & from a few other people make it really worth while for me - the financial rewards certianlly dont as some people may think. The effort and resources required to keep this ship going, especially from South Africa, is enormous. We really appreciate ur kind and supportive words.

Change always bends some people the wrong way and we do our best to minimize impact, although I concede our communications is not always spot on.

We will continue to improve

Thanx

Jon

It's great news that there will be an ads free membership service in the near future, that's something I've been hoping for for a while now. I am having less trouble with the stream than I had been last week, so between that development and the news that an ads free service will be launched, I'm very happy with the direction things are headed. Thanks Africam.

I'm fairly new to Africam.  Thank-you Admin, Rangers, and Members for everything you do to make Africam more enjoyable for All of us.  Making it accessible to catch up on things we've missed. The sharing that goes on from all over the world is phenominal.  Again, thank-you!

I, personally, like that the ads are at the bottom rather than popping up full screen during refresh.   If I choose not to watch the ads at a particular time I adjust the bottom of the cam screen so I don't see them.  I take pictures that do not show the ads.  If you are excited there is an elephant,,,a giraffe...a cheetah...a kingfisher...or whatever it may be you will see around the obstacles.

? for the unhappy people:  Do you not watch t.v. because of the commercials?.......that is part of life, too.

I liked Roger H.'s suggestion and think the free membership/ ad free fee could work. Whatever you decide to do, Admin, ......you have my full support.  I appreciate everything everyone here has done.......and I have learned so much about Africa, and each day for me now...is truly a new day.

Hopefully I have not offended anyone...that was not my intentions. This is just my opinion on the matter at hand.    Hazel

Gday haze loved ya post, im sure you'll get many with tv/ad comment but, lol..

i do have a tv run 24/7 and it is on commercial networks... however lol and this is where it gets tricky .. i do not watch the shows that i love on there or sports because of the ads.. i tend to go the net for such things where i can get a ad free format... there is nothing worse then missing a touch-down, goal or in my case a nasccar crash thanks to ads. and i find ads affect the flow of the comedies i enjoy watching like 2 and a half men... So yes it is a fair point you made but thanks to the net i am able to avoid ads in most things i watch. the tv is on as company mainly i spose lol..

i also think its important none of us get offended as it is opinions that are needed at times like this..  they cant work out  a good ad schedule etc  without us all letting them know what our limits are... and i think it was natural for people like me to feel a lil distressed in the first few weeks of the change . and hopefully they all will, as me move on to be constructive in there approach to the issues at hand..

anyway i think i've over done my two cents worth  so i better shut up a while lol... have a good day all be safe and happy where ever you are...

H i Paul.  I'm happy you weren't offended.  Where I live when you watch a program you go to a commercial break after every so many minutes.  I've grown up with it.  So because you have no ad t.v. I have decided to move to Australia....just kidding ( although I do want to visit there). With my favorite programs I record them on my DVR box and then just fast forward through the commercials, which watching t.v. at my house is fun if you don't get motion sickness easily.  lol    As far as t.v. being company....I always have one on, too. Smile

I added the comment about the t.v. watching hoping people would realize this isn't anything to get mad about, and that a solution can come about if people put their ideas out there.  With anything new you have to work to get the kinks out.  It will with time be even more wonderful than it is now.

The people that are involved in putting this site together put a lot of work into making it special for all us and they deserve to know it's so appreciated.  So I guess we just need to be a little patient.

Thanks for talking to me, Paul, and I look forward to someday vacationing in Australia (when I get there ....I will be.....watching t.v. at your house....lol    Good day, Paul, see you in Africam!!

hello, I'm back for som comments, or ideas regarding the "cams".
I been an "africammer" for almost 2 years, and a while ago, I "signed off"
because of the "commersials" interupts in the stream. I do check out the forums, because I'm interested in the devellopment of the sight.

But I must admit that Africam has given me so much pleasure over the time, so  Itś hard so say "good bye".

Why is a commersial break every 30 minutes or ever every hour a problem?
The answer is, "africammers" live with the sound, like other people "live" whith the TV-sound on. A break in the sound, advertising is like drop a bomb in the Church.

I hade big plans for the future of a school here in Sweden, my plan was to place a 32 '' TV on the wall of the biologic institution of our "high school"
that showed NK 24/7, but because of the commercials breaks, this is no allowed at our school.

How to finance???
If this is tecnically possible I don't now. but...
I'm willing to "subscribe" to the cam, like other people subscribe to TV channels. I value NK more than a "movie channel" on TV.

Is it possible to "mail out, an url to subscribers every week?
Let's say abt. 15 US$ for all the cams /month. That's free from commercial.

For the moment I found another "cam" in Botswana, thatś free from commercials
while running. "Pete:s pond", they fight with finance and Technology difficulties like africam do.

Finally, The "Flamingo cam", dump it, I'v been in Nakuru and seen them live, but the cam is like the "old one" with seals!!
nothing happens, It's doomed, better close it down, use the  money on NK instead.

Regards Lasse

I've noticed the Nkorho webcam has not had any Ad's in the viewer today.  If this is permenant then it certainly is good news.  There are many members that don't post much but visit the cameras daily.

Thank you Africam.

Edit: 11:55 Central Time

Nevermind.....They're back again.
