NKORHO   PAN GRAVE YARD PAN - KUDU CORNER PAN

Natural pans are one of the most interesting features of the African bush because so much happens in and around them. Natural pans are usually filled by rain during the wet season and depending on their size, level of utilization by animals, subsequent refilling and rates of evaporation, may empty within a week or two or may last months. Natural pans form most easily in soils with a high clay content. These soils are found mostly in basalt areas that give rise to clay soils and in low lying sodic areas along drainage lines. Natural pans are often areas of intense activity – providing drinking water for local wildlife, breeding habitat for frogs and water birds and mud for animals, which enjoy wallowing such as warthog, bush pig, buffalo and rhino.

Natural pans are often surrounded by the foamy nests of grey tree frogs (Chiromantis xerampelina) that construct their nests in trees or on objects overhanging the water. When the eggs hatch the tadpoles fall directly into the water.

Seasonal pans also play a significant role in the spread of wildlife diseases. Anthrax, which is endemic to the Kruger National Park and surrounding areas, has a close association with natural pans. Highly resistant anthrax spores gravitate to and are washed down into low-lying catchments areas where natural pools form. When these pans are full the concentration of spores is low and although animals are ingesting spores there are too few to precipitate the disease. During dry months of the year as the volume of water decreases in natural pans the relative concentration of anthrax spores increases to a point where a threshold is exceeded and animals ingest a sufficient quantity of spores to contract the disease. When the rain months return the water volume increases once again and the dilution factor decreases the anthrax spore concentration to a level where it is once again safe for the animals to drink the water. A similar cycle occurs with a disease spread by rodents in which a bacterium effects the myocardium (heart muscle) of elephants – especially bulls which drink more frequently from small natural pans than breeding herds – and can cause death – a condition referred to as endomyocarditis.

Village Weaver ~ Ploceus cucculatus

nests - e.p.

Village weavers derive that common name from their frequent habit of nesting near villages in Africa, probably for protection from predators that naturally fear people.

This  weaver builds a large coarsely woven nest made of grass and leaf strips with a downward facing entrance which is suspended from a branch in a tree. 2-3 eggs are laid. This is a colonial breeder, so many

nests may hang from one tree.

these birds build untidy domed nests with side entrances. Most specialized of the sparrow weavers is the social weaver of Africa, famous for its apartment-house nest, in which 100 to 300 pairs have separate flask-shaped chambers entered by tubes at the bottom.

Hi Barry  As for the antelope with the broken horns a large majority of these would come from fighting and competing for territory.

African Openbill

~ Anastomus lamelligerusin

new bird on cam (ever ) august 02 2009

The unusual looking bill is specialised for extraction of snails from their shells.

it feeds primarily on molluscs.

Open-billed Stork steadies the snail with its upper mandible (usually this is done underwater) and then the tip of the lower mandible (which is extremely sharp) is used to slip under the bony shield which protects the snail.

The lower mandible is then used to cut the muscle holding the snail in place and the body of the snail is extracted whole for immediate consumption. Mussels and other bi-valves are handled in a similar way with the lower mandible being used to slice the muscle which keeps the 2 halves of the shell tightly closed.

Banded Mongoose ~ Mungos mungo ~ august  07 2009

description:
Banded mongooses are small carnivores, no more than 12 to 16 inches long and weighing three to five pounds. Similar in look to a weasel or cat, mongooses have brown and gray fur. Unlike other mongoose species, banded mongooses have dark bands across their backs, for which they are named. They have five digits on their front paws but only four on their back feet. Also, they have non-retractable claws used for digging.

Food Source:
As carnivores, banded mongooses eat small vertebrates like birds, snakes and rats. Their diet also includes invertebrates like beetles or millipedes. They also are known to steal reptile or bird eggs and eat fallen fruit.

Behavior:
Banded mongooses are social animals that live in large packs with as many as 50 individuals, although smaller packs of 10 to 20 are more common. Diurnal animals, mongooses can be heard chattering to each other for most of the day. Banded mongooses work together in a group to fend off predators, first and foremost protecting their young and elderly. These mongooses will not stay in one habitat for more than a week, and when traveling they move together as would birds in flight.
