that is those areas  that do the actual filtration of the runoff water  & return a  cleaner product  to the lowlying water table . The (peat)  march   plants  . reeds / grasses together with the  lake bed  ect,  do the filtration  ,

as BARRY   mentioned frogs like  fresh water

It is just a natural depression that collects the runoff from maybe 80 acres.  Lots of sand beaches in the area.  The surrounding area is the remnant of an ancient lake bed, called the Great Black Swamp.
