Dan made it to South Africa in 2011....... Twice

Hi everyone last year I was very fortunate to be able to go to south africa twice, I went to a small reserve called Mankwe in the north, it was a very student friendly place and had no big cats just White Rhinos and everything else you would expect, but because it was student friendly they could not have any dangerous animals, luckily I was staying next to pilansberg and that had the big 5, I shall post some pictures and stories and i hope you enjoy and read. Here is a little taster to start.

The first time I went was with Plumpton college as part of my course, and this was the first animal I saw, now as some of you may know some reserves use hunting as a technique to bring in money, now although Mankwe was very student orientated they used hunting the excess males as side part, and as a result the animals were scared of vehciles and ran away, this is why this herd is off, this was taken on the way to the camp I stayed in which was right in the middle of the reserve

This is a Blesbok, might be new to a few people, but in a reserve you cannot have Blesbok and Bontebok together because they will breed across the species and this is I think Illegal in south africa maybe one of my south african friends can tell me Smiling

Ok I have teased you for long enough lets continue on this game drive so off into the distance was  two herds the first was a zebra herd

Smiling this was the first one to walk down, the whole herd followed and they were heading to the hills to avoid the 80+ lions many leopard two cheetah and a pack of wild dogs, the predators of pilansberg.

The zebras were joined by wildebeest as well but they had a little gem following them Smiling

And here it was a little baby a few months old perhaps but I was happy loved the baby Smiling

This picture just shows how family orientated zebras are Smiling

Springbok herd was also here, I love springbok but this was the only herd in the park.

The elephant was surronded by other critters as well Smiling

A nice herd of wildebeest sadly though Pilansberg has too many lions and has placed an order of 1000 more wildebeest to cope. Sad

Impies here as well in the distance

Here is a nice picture of mr elephant Smiling we got quite close and he did not even blink lol.

Springbok off in the distance these are the next critters with a delightful little suprise as well Smiling

So here are some more baring in mind the game drive has not even started yet but its over to you guys now as I have an unidentified bird and could not find it in my book so please could you help Sticking out tongue

Now time for some more blacksmith lapwings Smiling

Vervet monkeys and baboons showed no fear in this camp site as you can see.

Now this little cutie had a sad story we walked out to go on game drive and he fell out of a tree and we were all like noooooo, so we went over and the mum ran down and collected him but it turned out his back legs were deformed, he ran on his fronts legs but what might save him is the fact the troop lives in the camp, sadly nature can be cruel and this does happen but who knows the little guy might of made it

Casual zebra in the camp, right guys off we go on a game drive into the park Smiling.

So we move onto pilansberg national park now, some things you must know We went for a day trip so we lounged by the pool for the first part of the morning and had a lovely meal

Now as this a tourist spot the animals behave differently no fear of man you see so you can get very close and they do not even flinch a prime example of this was in the campsite where we went for a walk and found some impala the pictures I am about to show you are with no zoom as if you were standing there yourself

As you can see some young impalas I thought they would run after this shot but no

Not nervous at all

Head coms up I could almost touch them

And finally the closest shot now if you think about the first picture I took of the impala this is absolutely fantastic, its great for photos not so great for natural behaviour.
