The intention here is to build a catalog of elephants we see, with pictures, and as much identifying information as possible. Contributions are requested and encouraged!! Let's see how many we can accumulate. Elephants must have names!! I'm starting it off with a young fella who was at the watering hole just before and after dark tonight.

*************************************************************

Name - Fonzie Young male, cocky, just looks like a Fonzie! An expert estimate of his age would be appreciated. He has distinct notches on the back side of his right ear, and a very smooth left ear as shown in the photo's below. In this first pic of his right ear, note the large notch and a smaller one further back.

This picture shows his left ear which is almost a perfect straight line.

Great idea Roger ! I had a look through my pictures and found this one.

these pictures were taken on december 20, 2006

this elephant has a very distinctive notch in his right ear.

I don't have a name so I will just call him Ndlovu, which means Elephant in Zulu.

some more pics here on page 6 & 7 :

There's one lone male (probably pretty young) that we affectionately named Lonesome George, cuz he's thinking about the cute girls.

This amazing soul was identified by Elaine:

re: the ellie with deformed tusk?

this big old boy has been around for years and we saw him on the former AfriCam sites at Djuma Reserve (Neighbor to Nkorho) at the Gowrie dam..and almost always with 4 or 5 other bulls. ..we just saw him at this pan for the first time a few days ago. and i for one was very happy to see him!! and i wrote the info that i know of him with the pics that i posted..maybe the 14th or 16th march??

he has a skewed/deformed right tusk and a crippled left hind leg. And of course, no one has ever really known the way this all happened. We could all make guesses but, still never know for certain.
we were very happy to see that he was not alone, is keeping up with the gang that was there with him the other day ...and still alive and seems to be doing well.
his name was 'skewy'... and i guess it still is.

some intersesting info regarding ellie.

Both male and Female African Elephants have tusks where as the Indian Elephant only the male has tusks. This could make it a little difficult to sex the Ellies unless there is something obvious ( if you know what I mean Laughing out loud )

This bull (whom I'm nicknaming "Half Tusk"), not only has tusks which appear to have been broken off, but also has a distinct "fork" at the end of his tail. He appears to be an older/senior individual.

Leaving NK waterhole

On June 7th, he showed up on the Djuma Game drive in the a.m. Helen noticed that he had no hair on his tail. I like his tusks so I call him Monster Tusk.

It is believed that Skewy was killed by another bull elephant.  He was found with several large gashes on his back thought to be made by the tusks of another elephant.  I'm lifted to hear that there were signs of other elephants visiting him to mourn their loss.  Everytime an elephant came to the waterhole, my hopes were always up that it would be Skewy.  Now I realize how special his visits were and cherish the memories.

Rest in peace, Skewy.  I've known and watched this special guy on the cams for two years.  This is a very sad loss.  Skewy will be missed by all who knew him.    Cry

Wonky (Skewy) will be greatly missed.    I just know he's in a special place God has made for all animals who share this earth with us.

Hi Folks. I have been a long time viewer of Africam but admittedly rarely post here.

I knew Skewy as Wonky, his name given by the game drive guides over at Nkorho's neighbouring live streaming cam WildEarth Djuma. He was very well known over there.

Wonky/Skewy will be sadly missed..

Can't get Skewy off my mind and it took quite a bit of digging, but I located a thread that I started the very first time I laid eyes on that gentle giant. It was night when he and a friend ventured over to the waterhole and I couldn't quite make out what I was seeing.

Re-reading Elaine's memories of Skewy brings a smile to my face.

this is from Streaming Cam Pics March 15, 2007 (thanks Elaine)

hello  -  we had  this   elephant   arrive about

can you tell us anything about the animal - and collar  etc

thanks barry

Hi Barry

This is an Elephant bull Smiling

This Elephant is being monitored by the Sabi sands to track Elephant movement in the area. There are a couple of bulls and about 5 herds being monitored and every 3 months the Sabi sands release a report on their movements. They also often go and do head counts so they can get average sizes of herd.

I have seen the last report and it is quite interesting to see the distances that they move.

Have a great day

ELEPHANT  KNOWN AS  ** SKEWY  **

he has a skewed/deformed right tusk and a crippled left hind leg.

Good Evening

At Nk we have 2 electrified wires about 5 feet high around the camp to keep the Elephants out. Nkorho is one of the properties in the Sabi sands that border right on to the Kruger park, +/-800m from our Lodge, and there is no fence between us and the Kruger park.

Have a great day
