The intention here is to build a catalog of elephants we see, with pictures, and as much identifying information as possible. Contributions are requested and encouraged!! Let's see how many we can accumulate. Elephants must have names!! I'm starting it off with a young fella who was at the watering hole just before and after dark tonight.

*************************************************************

Name - Fonzie Young male, cocky, just looks like a Fonzie! An expert estimate of his age would be appreciated. He has distinct notches on the back side of his right ear, and a very smooth left ear as shown in the photo's below. In this first pic of his right ear, note the large notch and a smaller one further back.

This picture shows his left ear which is almost a perfect straight line.

Big Tusker at TE today (4/21) Big slit in right ear, I am pretty sure it's a bull.

Couldn't find him in the catalogue here...

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS ANIMAL HADT ITS TRUNCK CAUGHT

IN A SNARE

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE  OF OBSERVATION AT A PAN

Mapungubwe National Park when he noticed a young elephant that had part of its trunk missing. And then he noticed another. And another.

"Out of the herd of 67 animals no fewer than four were missing part of their trunk, most likely as a result of injuries caused by wire snares," says Van Aarde, who is the director of the Conservation Ecology Research Unit at the University of Pretoria.

"A short while later a second herd of 84 came in and I counted at least three more missing parts of trunks."

At Nk we have 2 electrified wires about 5 feet high around the camp to keep the Elephants out. Nkorho is one of the properties in the Sabi sands that border right on to the Kruger park, +/-800m from our Lodge, and there is no fence between us and the Kruger park.

Have a great day
