Quote Cerinthe:
I don't think many of you receive the newsletter from flamcam's facebook group, so I will post it here. Awesome news - the lesser flamingos have started breeding again for the third year in succession on their island in Kamfers Dam! We've seen many eggs already. The greater flamingos want in on the action it seems, and are looking at nests a...nd doing courtship displays. We hope they'll decide to breed too, that would be fantastic. The sadder side of the story is that the island is busy flooding because of too much storm water runoff and excess sewage water. Evapouration is not reducing the water level quickly enough. The central lower bits of the island are totally under water and nests are eroding away. Small chicks will have to survive being in the water if they fall off their nests. Hopefully as many chicks or more will be produced this breeding season than the last with the new, wetter conditions. But we fear that the island may be totally submerged or lost before the Municipality implements plans to divert excess water away from Kamfers Dam. __________________
