The average weight of a male giraffe is around 2,600lbs. where as the average weight of a female is around 1,800lbs. One intresting fact about giraffes are that the only need to sleep about 1hr a day. Most people who have seen giraffes up close notice that they have a very long tongue. A giraffes tongue is about 20inches long and is used for getting food or the branches off tall trees. The African Giraffe population consists of about 100,000-150,000 left in Africa. The life expectancy of a giraffe in the wild is about 14yrs old while the ones in captivity live to be about 25yrs old. One last intresting fact is that when a baby giraffe is born, the mother is standing up and the baby giraffe falls about 6ft to the ground below. Giraffes are a very intresting animal and now that its starting the dry season we are going to start seeing them alot more then we did in the wet season.
