The type of Hyena that we see and hear on EP and NK is the genus Crocuta also know as the Spotted Hyena or the Laughing Hyena. They live in communities called clans which can consist of up to 80 hyenas. These clans are matriarchal or run by females. The Hyena is a very smart animal. A full grown Hyena measures around 90-170cm in length and stands about 68-93cm tall at the shoulder. There are also other types of Hyena. The Brow Hyena and the Striped Hyena which we do not see around EP or NK. Hyenas are primarily scavengers and often in Africa have disputes with Lions over food and territory. We often hear Hyenas at on EP and sometimes at NK. The Hyena call can sometimes be described as a whoop sound. Most of the time when a Hyena calls, you know it. So ask yourself next time you hear a Hyena call....what is that Hyena calling for?
