Location and subject matter
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, located in Northeast Tanzania, near the Kenya border. Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano, and is one of the tallest free standing mountains in the world. It reaches an elevation of 5,895 m (19,335.6 ft ) and is the largest of about 20 volcanoes near the southern end of the East African Rift Valley. In the centre of its ice covered dome, is Kilimanjaro's summit crater, known as Kibo, measuring around 2.5 km (1.5 miles) across. Kilimanjaro stands just over 330km (205 miles) south of the equator in the Kilimanjaro National Park.
When to view
March through to May is the rainiest season and often when the heaviest snow falls occur. June through to July is usually clear of clouds. August and September can have completely clear days, but usually a dripping cloud belt girdles the mountain above the forest and moorland. The summit can be totally clear and the successful climber would be able to look down on a vast sea of clouds with distant mountain peaks poking through like islands. October to December brings thunderstorms that pass over the mountain. Typically the clouds disappear in the evening, leaving nights and mornings clear with excellent visibility. January and February are usually dry, warm and clear with brief rain showers which make for good climbing conditions. The cam runs through out the day and night. The images are normally refreshed at 5 minute intervals.
