Last night many of us had the incredible treat to hear lions roar. This made me remember an incredible even that happened to me in Phinda, South Africa. I had heard lions call out before, but I had never really heard what a roar sounds like.
One night, our ranger came accross two male lions resting near the side of the road. After we photographed them for a bit, the ranger turned out the vehicle lights (now pitch black) and made a remarkable imitation of a lion's roar from the landrover. Immediately both male lions started to roar in "defense" of their territory. The sounds were unbelievable and LOUD. The bass of the roar was so loud, that you could "feel" the sound through the seats. After sitting there for several minutes in complete awe (and a little concern), the roaring stopped and there was again silence. It was only then did I realize that I culd have taken out my video camera just to record the sounds. Another missed opportunity...oh whoa is me.

Hi Sabine
Adrenaline was flowing and I suspect my chest was pounding. After all was done, I realized how alone I felt since there was no light whatsoever. You are in a wide open landrover and you know there is nothing to stop the lions from jumping in. Its a good thing they do not find us al that interesting.
