Meeting Iceage in Amsterdam!

I have made many friends in the 8 months I've been a member of Africam, and gotten very close to a few of you, but my newest friend has got to be the most awesome of all.

I PM'd Iceage about 3 weeks ago because he was new and called a jackal a "lovely dog"... I didn't know he was kidding, so I very briefly told him that it was a jackal!  That was the beginning!  Since then there have been many emails and marathon phone calls from Holland, but here's the real amazing ( to me anyway ) part of our brand new FRIENDSHIP:  My husband and I will be traveling to Amsterdam this coming week to take a river boat cruise  to Budapest.  Iceage, who lives 3 hours away, has offered with great enthusiasm, to drive to Amsterdam and be our personal tour guide for the one full day we have in his beautiful city!

This,  to me is a beautiful  thing for anyone to do, let alone someone I've "known" for such a short time.  It restores my sometimes faltering faith in mankind!

Thank you Iceage!  And thank you, Africam for the good things I've gotten from being a member.

Omg noooo! a déjà vu!

Just joking Emjay, I went there to meet BigFrank and ........ I lost him in Amsterdam -ed!

I wish you all the fun a meet can bring. It is one of those pass-through cities and I have been there to meet several africammers on their lay-over.

Pics will be great as there are too few meets between africammers. I wish someone would get it in his/her head to organise a meet again.

No problem with this "meet"... he's coming to our hotel to pick us up, and the amount of research that has gone into this, you would NOT believe!  LOL I will definitely have the full story, with pics, upon my return!

I did that too! lol

I took the first train from Leuven, very early cos his flight came in very early and we then had a full day in Amsterdam. BigFrank was about to have his one day of culture of the year, he called it.

We set off from Schiphol to Amsterdam, walked around a bit and what he really wanted to see was the Rijksmuseum, but he kept calling it the Rembrandt museum and that's where the snag lied.

When we wanted to get off the tram at the Rijksmuseum, I stepped off first and then he, I thought. There was the sound of money falling and I saw from the corner of my eye BF bending over to pick it up, but I thought it was of the ladies behind him. BF discovered that his wallet was gone and he picked up his own change that fell. from his pocket He didn't say anything and stepped back on the tram to see if his wallet fell where he sat. I looked at the museum and didn't see he was back on the tram!

His wallet was stolen.

When I turned round, I only saw the tramdoors close and the tram leaving with BF!

I made such a fuss that all the trams in the entire Amsterdam was searching for BF that day, he was quite the celebrity Laughing When we did the canal tour there was a photo taken of us and they(tramline) took a copy of it and distributed it to all the trams so they knew what he looks like.

Later in the day I found BF back at his hotel, but he left for his trip to SA with only a few canadian dollars in his pocket, but everything got well in the end.

Yes, Iceage has warned me repeatedly about the pickpockets and luggage theives! How horrible for BF! AND YOU! Being a naturally suspicious person (shut up, those of you who know me well!) lol, I will do the moneybelt thing, and my husband keeps his wallet in a front pocket! BUT... wish us well! LOL

Hi emjay,Iceage et al,hope your meeting up goes well.  Until my wallet and me got lost, meeting cerinthe was terrific. We shared a nice boatride tour of Amsterdam and chatted. Now my troubles are just a funny story that was part of an amazing trip.  I stayed on the tram. As it pulled away I was veinly searching for my wallet. Now,there are no straight roads in Amsterdam, everything goes around the canals. By the time I got off the tram and walked in the direction I thought Id come from I was hopelessly lost. With just over $2 in Canadian coin in my pocket now,I wandered the street asking for help from anyone who didnt look too shifty..popped into some businesses but most didnt know english. Finally 2 older ladies stopped..I think they thought I was begging to be honest. Their english wasnt great, but they hailed someone who could help me. Together they tried to figure a way to get me back to my hotel(day room). The man they hailed managed to convince a cab driver to take me to my hotel, and that the hotel would pay him. The cab driver had all of the emergency VISA numbers,so before we hit the hotel Id cancellled all my credit cards. Once there to pay him became another adventure. As my cards were now cancelled, that was no good and the hotel wasnt thrilled of the idea of paying,as I was only booked in there for 12 hours. Finally the hotel paid, now I had to reimburse them somehow. I  asked they get hold of the Canadian consulate, who in their infinite wisdom expected me to jump a cab, take it across the city to their office, have the cab wait, rack up a nice charge and return to hotel to now pay them and a huge cab charge. I only had a few hours left by now till my plane left for SA so I declined. Eventually we played around and I called my father in Toronto, who faxed his credit card info and we paid using that.(dad faxing Amsterdam ..him and technology dont get on well...but that was another adventure). Eventually Cerinthe found me at my hotel, which was good cuz as I had reboarded the tram,Id passed her my camera bag! Cerinthe had a wack of people on the look out for me,most wondered how she could lose anyone so big!? I must say that VISA was terrific, when I called to cancel my cards, they gave me a number to call for a replacement when I got to South Africa. Within one hour of calling from Africa,I recieved my replacement card, delivered to me at an africam friends home I was using as my base while in Joberg. The rest as they say is history,I had an awesome trip going to 4 parks Id watched on africam and met over 40 folks I knew from africams chat and boma. This lead to a return trip the following year to 6 parks africam had cameras at,plus a visit to africam radio. The whole story is now all part of the adventure of travel, fortunately I had my plane ticket and passport and the rest of the trip was everything and more then Id hoped for!

Good Heavens Frank.... what a story! I hope I NEVER have to go through anything like that! Cry Now I don't feel so badly about being such a naturally suspicious/cautious person! My husband says I start to video and am not aware of anything going on around me... that's when he takes over watching my every move! Laughing I'll bet you never carry your wallet in your back pocket any more when you travel!

Hopefully, with the help of Iceage, we will have no horror stories about our visit to Amsterdam, and only good pictures to share with all of you when I return WITH my cameras! Wink

Are you kidding? You obviously haven't flown lately, my desert flower! They don't FEED you anymore! You have to BUY your food, pillow & blanket! It's rough out there! LOL

I'll be hopping from HNL to LA, to Chicago, (oops... missed ya!) to DUBLIN, and finally, "2 days" later, to Amsterdam! By then, we'll be basket cases, but we have the afternoon to rest up for our full day of touring a-la-"Iceage/Swift Tourist Agents 1st class" on Saturday!

Last summer I DROVE to Chicago (with 3 kids and 5000 + total miles).  But I meant to BUY some food before you get on the plane in beautiful places like Amsterdam. Then when you fly over...between Chicago and LA, you can just open a window and drop it down!  I'll catch and enjoy.  But feel free to bring enough for you to enjoy some yourself!
