Aquila and Karen have really been doing their homework regarding the Mapogo Mafia! Maybe we could get a moderator to move this to it's own thread so we can access the information easier and add what we find without having to search thru the Waterhole Chat thread? I for one am finding this talk about them fascinating and would love to have it easily accessible. Please...

yeah, that relationship sounds a bit tense, especially if the older boy's cubs were killed. If he did leave the coalition I would guess it wasn't by choice.

Maybe Ingwe or Gerda know if it is normal for them to kill off one of the coalitions' cubs. I didn't think they did that but don't really know about a group as large as this one.

Seems the related ones might be pushing out the older unrelated male. This group is really interesting that is for sure. LOL

I was surprised that Elephant Plains called them cannibals. They must see some unusual behavior I would think to call them that. Or maybe their spelling of the name means cannibals. Again, it is interesting trying to piece all this together.

The 4\2 splitting, in that sighting, is interesting since all our wh sightings recently have been 2 males, based on what we all saw and Karin's reporting more recently. And i think, had they all been available for the dead buff, we would still have seen them there next morning. So maybe they split & come back together. While they alleged that the older 1 had split off, I'm betting that was temporary. Why would he give up the strength of the coalition for the vulnerability of being alone?

This info was in the Elephant Plains monthly newletter Today:

The five Maphogho’s/Cannibals (male lions) pleasantly surprised us with their presence one morning. We found them feeding on an adult bull giraffe that they had killed the night before. Although this feat sounds incredible, it is actually easier to do than it sounds:  when lions chase giraffes they will herd them towards thick bush or a dry riverbed – reason being that the giraffe/s will hopefully trip or stumble over or through obstacles.  As soon as they fall down the lions will be onto them in a flash!  These guys probably couldn’t believe their luck, as only a few hundred meters away from their giraffe kill, a bull rhino died of natural causes…  They were spoiled for choice between giraffe or rhino steak!
