It depends, Tabs. Cicadas here are on a 7 or 12 yr cycle (can't remember which). Of course, there are several family lines so we don't really go 7 yrs without. And there are always some about...but when you hit the big year it feels like the air is literally vibrating around you. They don't bother me but I've known some people who threatened to get their shotgun out LOL.

Still...they are a lower pitched sound here. Nothing like the shrill stuff we are hearing at the wh.

oh thanks. I'll go look. So do we think that is the chinese water torture we've been subjected to here lately? If so I like our American cicadas better lol

I have only heard American cicadas in Texas and Florida - but I can tell you that they appear to be much quieter than African species!

However, my judgement on this may be a little skewed as, when I was in Tx/Fla I was staying in houses, whereas in Africa I was staying mostly in tents in the bush and sometimes the cicadas were actually under my bed!

I got used to the cicadas in Africa eventually  - but they were relatively quiet compared to the frogs that were living in my tent, which kept me awake most nights!

I am sure that you must know what I mean, as the frogs and toads that inhabit the waterhole at Nkorho are actually much louder than the cicadas and, if you have them croaking all night above your head, what chance do you have of getting much sleep? Frown

*yawn*

I did see something on Google about the African cicadas and how loud they are (107 decibals) but couldn't find a sound file to compare. They have a different name for them and I can't find it now. sombosie or sumpin' like that?

I had my sound down because of the chirping so I just happened to glance up and see the ellies.

Did anyone ever figure out yesterday what was in symphony with the toads?

Oh by the way thanks to all who took pictures of the lions last week, I was out of the office for 4 days and missed seeing them.
