Cry of the Kalahari

Cry of the Kalahari

by Mark and Delia Owens
ISBN 0-395-64780-0

This must be my favorit book.
It tells the story of Mark and Delia Owens and their efforts to study the animals in the Central Kalahari game reserve.

Reading this book makes me wish I could spend some time of my life studying and living surrounded with wildlife as they did...

A must read !

I really loved this book. Yes, the Owens might have made some mistakes in the way they handled and looked at the lions, but their hearts were in the right place and they were nearly pioneers in the field. They came along at the same time as the Diane Fosseys, Jane Goodall and others like them. I think they did the best they could with what they knew and had at the time. At least that's my personal opinion. We certainly know, or I hope we know much more now.

Yes, and they really did a disservice to the animals - especially the lions - by habituating them to people. You just knew that the lions were going to get into trouble the next time they met less accomodating folk. Book is a good read but start of dangerous trend (old book- I think it came out in the 70's) .

This is a beautifully written book. One of my favorites, in spite of the fact that I kept thinking through much of it how stupid the authors were to do some of the things they did.

I haven't read it, and I ordered it yesterday after reading all your comments. It will take 6 - 8 weeks to get here and will be worth the wait Smiling

I really enjoyed this book which I read about a month ago. I think the most impressive part was that it was written in the 1970's before the advent of our more sophisticated communications network....ie internet, GPS, lap-tops and CPS. I especially enjoyed their tales about the hyaena's and lions. Well worth reading.

What a read, I loved reading this book in spite of all the controversy going on about it.
