Yes, they are. I´am often there.
What animals have you seen? A lot af them are in the Winterquatiers now an the Visitors can´t see them.

I saw many different animals. (only a few enclosures were empty) Spotted Hyenas, brown hyenas, striped hyenas, black-backed jackals, lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, African elephants, Asiatic elephants, giraffes, zebras, wolves, foxes, flamingos, owls and different vulture species is what I can remember at the moment. But there were many more...

@ Katja, it took a long time, did´nt it? It is the largest landscape Zoo in Europe (160 ha)
and only Zoo in Europe what as breeding groups of african and indian Elephants.

I only had 5 1/2 hours there, and it wasn't enough to go everywhere. I never made it to the SW corner where the reptiles are.

There was a comment on the waterhole thread about the last Lion sighting that we had, some folks thought the Lion didn't look in good health. Looking at these latest hyena and Lion pics from the Zoo, it's true that these animals look very healthy and clean. I thought "our" Nkorho lion looked in pretty good shape and it's interesting how we judge what that good shape should be.

Ps - thank you all for the pics!!!

You are right, Ingwe.
I have noticed that male lions in zoos often have a beautiful manes that you rarely see in the wild. I suppose that's because they don't have to fight or walk through dense bush.
Wild lions also have more scars which makes them look roughed up. Maybe therefore they appear to be in "not so good condition".

Ingwe...I thought too that the Nkorho lion looked really in excellent fighting condition....LEAN AND MEAN..which is how I think lions should look.

I am a member of the Toronto Zoo and I get to visit it every month or so. Here are some of my pictures from my various visits:

This is Jerroh, and he is six years old. He doesn't have a mane because he was neutered, and despite the fact that he suffered an illness as a young cub, he's the biggest in the pride and dwarfs his 14 year old (?) father, whom I'm till trying to get a good picture of.

I believe this is Thika, one of the six female African Bush Elephants:

Malayan Tapir

North American Moose:

This is the only picture I have of any animals at the zoo, the picture was taken with a camera phone before I got my digital camera. The animal is an ocelot, the place is Cape may county zoo in New jersey.
