suggestions for writing in forums...

Hi Moderators:

I enjoy reading the various forums, but am a tad confused with so much going on... for example, there's the avatar, this is not a distraction in itself.... however in the text itself there is so much going on that one cannot decipher the current message in the thread. There's a quote that somehow gets thrown in the body of the text, if one is not a regular on here, it gets terribly confusing. At times the response from someone is just a smiley, but the quote takes up the entire space, together with other icons flashing here and there. In addition, some choose to add the questions and remarks from a previous thread, and then their response could just be two or three words. Phew!! very very confusing!! I was wondering if there was some way of keeping the current text to just text, with no quotes, icons or previous thread references?? It would make reading it faster. I do enjoy all the various comments and have a lot of fun watching all the animals. Your comments would be appreciated. Many many thanks,

Loretta

Ben-o-Den,

Pardon my ignorance but for instance let's take your quote... when I first started reading the forums, I was very confused with that quote. At first I could not figure out whether that was part of the message you were trying to convey, or something else. After reading the forums for a few days, I was able to decipher the message, the quotes, and the icons. What exactly does your quote mean? I'm just trying to clarify all of this in my own head. For instance, what is the significance of a quote? How is it related to the topics at the waterhole, on this boma site etc.etc.?

Well thanks for responding and letting me know that it might be feasible although you thought it a good idea too.

Thanks,
Loretta Smiling

Quotes in a different color would be cool, indeed, but not sure whether the BB software supports a different default color for quotes... Reducing the quote to the sentence that got us to respond is probably also good for the one line responses... Of course, I'm terrible at saying anything in only one line.. LOL

Hello Tabs:

Many thanks for your response. Yes, I did read the latest rules and regulations for posting. I'm sure it will improve it 100%. I wonder if the quotes could perhaps be in italics or another colour to separate them from the actual messages folks write about? Just thinking out loud here. I know some of the quotes are fairly long. Thanks again,

Loretta

Hi Loretta and welcome to the Africam Boma!

As you will see if you read the new Guidelines and Rules for posting on the Boma, the Moderators and Admin are trying to eliminate uneccessary text and pictures from previous messages - and are asking Bomites to reduce the sizes of their emoticons etc in order that other users are not offended or confused...

The Bomites have, so far, responded magnificently to our various requests (Thanks all!) which not only help newbies to read the messages that they are interested in but also helps Africam to save Bandwidth costs.

Smileys (icons) are allowed as long as they are not taken from websites which do not give permission for their usage and as long as they comply with the rules about the size of them.... they add to the conviviality of the Boma and we welcome their use as they can often display the emotions that Bomites are trying to convey and can eliminate any misconceptions between people from different cultures who may otherwise mis-interpret messages.

Please read the Guidelines and Rules at the top of the Boma to see what is allowed - and what is not - and if you have any further suggestions or complaints please post them in the 'Suggestion Box' forum or email Africam.
