t-storm the other night?

I am curious as to the light show a few nights ago (prior to New Years) there were what looked like flares or bottle rockets from the ground up then the sky seemed to explode. Is this normal in Africa? Many here found it strange.

Hello everyone!!!!
I saw that also... and every night there are streaks of light bouncing around in every direction... I'm assuming these are some kind of night bugs?? I did read where there are nightjars out at night but these are birds, correct? and aren't the lightening speed streaks that I'm seeing are they? This may sound like a really stupid question but hey that's how we find out right?

Africa has many thunderstorms during the rainy season (which is now) and it is entirely possible that this is what you saw.

It is high summer in South Africa right now - very hot and humid!
