Does anyone think that the baby giraffe might have bitten the mother's tail in efforts to nurse? It seemed that the baby wanted to nurse and the mother wanted to get away from the baby, although she did finally allow some nursing. But that would be awfully rough, so perhaps the mother was injured and the nursing issues were independent..

No, I don't think so. I think that the injured giraffe got attacked by a lion.

I doubt highly the injuries to the momma giraffe had anything to do with the baby. Momma was missing part of her tail, the sign of a predator attack. I posted pictures so you could see. If you look closely at the picture of the baby nursing you can see momma's tail.

Thanks Katje,
That would make more sense, and then I guess she was lucky not to be more severely injured..

Oh, this is the new topic, thanks Katja! Laughing out loud

I wonder about the giraffe with the halftail? This because 2 days ago I recorded a clip with a giraffe with a half-tail, and the baby was there too. However the giraffe did not have blood, so maybe something happened in between?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDa4RizZ7Ek You can see her in this clip, I do not see any blood though, but maybe I am overlooking?

You're welcome Fani. Whatever attacked momma G. tried to grab her tail to pull her down which could've been done by a hyenna. I doubt it was a lion, there would've been long claw marks, like cat scratches. These injuries look more like bite marks. It could also be the blood we're seeing on her legs is not injuries themselves but just blood from her tail swishing since they're at the same level on both legs. Also I saw the tail close up and it was bloody this morning. There maybe now two giraffes with half tails or whatever was after this momma went after her again.. or it was the same giraffe from yesterday and her tail began to bleed again from swishing it to keep flies off.

Good point. I said lion without looking closely at the injuries, simply because I couldn't imagine a hyaena attacks such a big giraffe. But hyaenas are opportunists, so why not...

Question: Does anyone know what long term effects the lose of the giraffe's tail will have? If she is unable to keep off bugs from that area of her body will she become sick?

Hmm, I guess we'll never know for sure what happened to the momma G. I was just struck by how uninterested she was in nursing.. moving away, repeatedly discouraging the contact. But I am sure I wouldn't feel like nursing after being attacked by a lion or a hyena either.. We'll all have to monitor the tails of the mommas over the next few days..

Good morning/good afternoon fellow cammers. I'm up and ready to start another day (6:45 EST). Looks like I missed some animals at the pan earlier today, hopefully they will make a show before I have to get my work day started. I am sorry to hear of the giraffe with the bloody legs, some sort of tail injury. Thanks to those who video and snap shots. The pond looks serene this afternoon, and not a cloud in the sky. Wish I was there!

I was looking at the giraffes pics with the half tails. I dont think it is the same one. The one from Dec 21 (2;35am) has a much shorter nub of a tail. In the pic from Feb 1, with blood, (1;31am) the tail is much longer.
I have no clue, but will a giraffe tail regrow? Its not unheard of.
I hate that some preditor is going for my raffies...
BTW: Hello to everyone!!!!

I think these are some of the strangest noises I have heard from the pan. Are these natural bird/animal or is it cam noises. I can't tell. I taped that metal clanging noise, and now there is a high pitch thing. (can't describe it)

I think I'm on a bit of a 20 sec loop with bird chirping and the high pitched whine

You're not alone on that loop. Happened right after all that strange noise, so I guess that answered my question. They weren't animal or bird in nature, must have been cam.

Morning all (or afternoon/evening)

Boy was earlier crazy. I was amazed by the elephant. Such a handsome male and he just hung around the pond...very lazy.

Then the giraffe. When I first saw them, I thought the mama was trying wean the young. I didn't see the injuries on her. The young giraffe kept trying and she kept turning. But then they zoomie got a close up and my eyes filled up with tears.

I was so happy when she finally let the young giraffe nurse. She looks like she is in a lot of pain. But the good news is she was up and walking around. She was eating. I think she will recover from her injuries.

The injury looked like it had just happened, so i'm sure she was in shock and pain. I just pray she recovers and doesn't get any infection.

It looks like the other adult (dad?) was keeping a close eye on both of them.

I think if anything were to happen to the mother, the young giraffe would be fine. He/She is grown up enough that I think it could drink water and eat and still live a healthy life. Hopefully this doesn't happen.

I also don't think it was a lion. Whatever it was, it wasn't large enough to take her down. I'd think a lion would try to take her down from the throat area...but I could be wrong. I was thinking along the lines of hyena or cheetah. I am sure she was protecting her baby.

Lets just hope she recovers.

I do have a funny story. I don't know if anybody caught it. The impala were in the back sparing (is that spelled right?) and having a grand old time. The one male stopped and turned around to eat. Then the second male slowly sneaked up on the other male and poked him right in the toosh. That impala jumped so far in the air and ran. It was quite funny. He came back and they continued sparing. It was all for pratice and play.

Oh that is interesting, it will be easy to regonize her like this, but I hope she doesn't have any pain though. So now I wonder if there are 2 half-tailed Giraffe or it's the same Laughing out loud

I am sure it wasn't a cheetah. A cheetah would never go for prey as big as a giraffe.

That is strange, I just noticed my Waterbuck clip does not contain sound hihi, I forgot to turn it on.
