Now, down to business, did anyone else here that gunshot? Could it be poachers in the area?

Yes, I heard, Lyn. Could be a tree branch breaking. As for poachers...I would think that's possible, but they wouldn't last long if caught. Some time ago a post was made about one being shot by rangers when he was caught.

Here's an article on mongooses, but says nothing about noises they might make other than meerkats who let out a loud scream.

You're welcome. Is it the squeaking sound we're hearing now? Could be a "dainty" cricket. Laughing out loud

Darn...it just stopped.

No it's not the dainty cricket with boots Laughing out loud I googled "animal sounds" and there are some good sites.....but...no mongoose. Maybe they make no sound.

I've been trying to bring up the Nkorho Sounds site and it won't load. Will try later and see if mongoose is listed.

Just read my mammal book and it does say that "mongooses contact is maintained by a continuous series of low calls; from time to time the pitch rises to the moving out call, and the group moves on." hope this helps.. Laughing out loud
