Cyclone
Mon, 19/02/2007 - 9:22pm
The South African Weather Service has reported that there is a possibility of a cyclone, currently somewhere close to Madagascar, hitting the coast of Mozambique towards the end of this week, which may bring large amounts of rain to Mozambique as well as parts of northern South Africa (which could possibly include the area where Nkorho Cam is situated). This will be preceeded by high temperatures - the forecast at Skukuza today is 37C. Mozambique is currently experiencing massive flooding in the Zambezi valley, well north of the cam, but further flooding in the south could be devastating for that country. Landi

Forgive my ignorance, but is cyclone in SA the same as tornado in the US? If it is, I hope you have some place safe to go to. __________________

I don't think it will be so bad for SA to get a lot of rain. The more it rains, the more they will have for dinner __________________

Cyclone Favio can also be tracked at http://english.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/si200714.html It appears it is expected to turn northward and perhaps miss Nkorho.

Be careful I clicked on the address to check where the cyclone was and it shuts down Internet Explorer. Don't know if it is the web site or what. __________________

Thanks for the "heads up", Landi. And thanks for the weather tracking sites all:-) Is there a site that gives us news in English about this general area? __________________

Thanks so much everyone for the sites. Those storms can be so fickle. Looks like Madagascar was 'spared' somewhat...even tho they'll get both offshore and onshore winds. I pray that everyone stays safe. __________________

Yeah, a "hurricane" in the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific is equivalent to a typhoon in the Western Pacific or a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean. The confusion lies in the fact that many Americans use "cyclone" as a synonym for "tornado."

Does anyone know if Zimbabwe will be affected, I'm heading out there for two month in just over a week?
LionLover, It looks like it heading straight toward Harare, Zimbabwe, but that's about 300 miles from the coast. It's a minimal cyclone now, and will begin to loose strength dramatically when it hits land. I doubt it will be much of a threat by the time it crosses Mozambique.

It looks as though the storm is heading for Zim - but according to the map, the storm will peter out into a 'Tropical depression' which just means heavy rain and the wind speed will be less than 40 mph. I am jealous - where are you going in Zim and what will you be doing? __________________

I have been out there before and loved it so had to go back! Hoping to take a trip to Matobo and Hwange National Parks as well.
Cannot wait!
I have been to Hwange - and it was amazing - but that was in '99 and things have changed dramatically since then. I would love to hear a report on your trip, I hope you will post it here? __________________

Yikes! Well, on the one hand, I suppose we might get a lightning & thinder show at the pan, but I hope it's not too devastating for the folks in its path. And I hope it doesn't knock out the cam. Thanks for that update, Landi.
