I will probaply get spanked by the mods for posting this here, but I have posted a similar entry in the Camera forum, and have gotten no response. I also PM'ed Campbell a week ago, and it has not been read yet. I messaged WaveLit and was ignored. I'm posting this in various forums in the hope that someone who cares and can respond will see it.

I discovered this camera in late November 2006. For weeks, I could start up the WMP and watch uninterrupted for hours at a time, with only occasional outages, usually associated with storms and completely understandable.

This is no longer the case. My trouble seems to have begun about the same time as WaveLit changed the address of the WMP feed to mms://live.wildlife.wavelit.net/6192NKP. Since then, viewing this camera has become an exersize in frustration to the point where it's almost not worth fooling with.

I am seldom able to get more than a few consecutive seconds of streaming video before getting buffering messages and video freezes. Streaming video more often resembles an intermittent slide show with random time intervals between images. Particularly disconcerting is the fact that the video frequently freezes, while the audio continues normally, giving the impression that all is working when it is not. The only way I know there is a problem is if I randomly restart the WMP, if I hear sounds indicating animal presence but I see nothing, or if someone in the Boma posts an entry about seeing activity that I am not seeing.

It is extremely dissappointing to think you have been watching the waterhole for quite some time thinking there was no activity, when in fact, you are looking at a snapshot that has been frozen for some time, you have been misled by the normal sounding audio, and you have missed significant activity.

A high percentage of the time I get a message from the WMP saying "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct."

Nothing has changed on my end, and I have the same trouble on three different computers with two different cable providers.

I cannot be the only fan of this camera that is about ready to give up on it because of these kind of issues. Is anyone else experiencing the same level of frustration?

We're still having a problem here, I've tried the WMP and winamp. Both the MMS and the HTTP. Of course, we've also tried the wavelit.com one.

We miss Africam, hope you guys are streaming properly again soon!

Hi, I am aware of the problem, thanks. Wavelit is our service provider and the issue/ service lies with them. I am in contact with them to sort this issue out. I assure you it is as frustrating to me as it is to you.

Thank you Campbell. I'm suspicious that WaveLit is trying to discourage us from watching the camera via the standalone WMP. I think it's because they want to drive up the count of people seeing their ads to increase revenue.

In any case, I think my problem has been resolved. I changed the address in my playlist from the mms protocol to http, and it seems to have fixed my problem.

Took,

You'se is a GOOD Hobbit, and I thank you Laughing out loud

I changed the address in my WMP playlist from mms://live.wildlife.wavelit.net/6192NKP to http://live.wildlife.wavelit.net/6192NKP

I watched the pan for several hours this evening without a single glitch. A while ago as a test I opened the mms address and immediately began getting buffering messages and image freezes again. I switched back to the http address and it's been smooth sailing every since.

I believe this problem with the mms address began when WaveLit changed the address to 6192NKP.

May the wind be always on your back and your path downhill.

Your welcome, smalldog. I wish a few others here would download Winamp and media player classic and try them also then report back. I really like
media player classic it has a nice gray scale setting for night viewing and
a sharpen setting for day viewing. You adjust those by right clicking on it's
screen. Then to to shaders. Select sharpen for daylight and I use the
16-235 to 0-255 (ps 1.1) for night.

I tried that link KB and it works in WMP 11 (which is what I use). Thanks!

I have better luck with using this url.
http://live.wildlife.wavelit.net/6192NKP?MSWMExt=.asf

Then also I am using Winamp or Media Player Classic. I don't care much
for wmp.

Willywatch and Bottlenose, your posts have been send to Campbell and the techies already. I'm sure they will answer in the morning when they wake up.
Just hang on, we have send the posts in it's entirety to them so they can see your problem.

Can you restore to previous point when it was ok? It seems to work for me when I have a problem.

Thanks Pete, but this is not that kind of problem. If fact, indiscriminate restoring to a previous point can (and often does) cause more problems than it fixes. If you restore to a previous checkpoint, any software installations or system changes that were made after that checkpoint was taken will be lost, and suddenly recently installed software may stop working. This is a feature that should be used cautiously, and in my opinion, only in emergencies.

I have three computers and accress the Internet via two broadband cables (CableOne & Roadrunner). I have the problem on all of them, and doubt they all need "restoring". Furthermore, since I posted this thread, I have discovered many others are experiencing similar symptoms.

I believe this is a WaveLit issue, and only they can fix it.
