Anyone else think a chat room link would work here? I have seen some boards that have that set up so after you log on you click on a link and it sends you into a chat room. Sure would be a lot easier to sit back and visit with something like that and keep the postings uncluttered with chit chat. You would be able to sift though the different forums to find out information a lot easier if we had a user friendly place to just visit. The campfire is nice but a heck of a hassle to keep refreshing then go back and sort through the posting s you missed while you were typing a reply.

I've said this elsewhere but I'll share here as well.

No, I'm not for a chat room. I think because this is primarily a site that is open to viewers from all walks of life, nationalities, and age groups, monitoring a chat room would be an administrative nightmare.

I much prefer the daily chat threads because they permit the moderators to keep an eye on things and protect the members from what can often happen (personal attacks for one example).

Chat threads allow one to give more thought to what we are writing (saying) publicly to one another, give more time to read posts and formulate responses, and, allow us to continue communicating using real language and not that G*d awful chat abbreviation language.

Long live proper communication! Smiling

Personally, I don't do chat rooms, simply because the conversation(s) zip by too fast for me to keep straight. The few times I've tried to participate in chats I've left after just a few minutes because it was giving me a headache. Puzzled Smiling And I just can't bring myself to type in partial sentences with all the shorthand stuff. (i.e. "u r" for "you are") I much prefer the pace of a message board, so even if an Africam chat room was started up, you won't likely see me there much, if at all. I'll stay over here and visit with you, SD! Laughing out loud

I agree with Smalldog and Beth P. However, there are some who might enjoy a chat room. But, not I.

Something the admins might want to look at.
Not quite a chat room but more like live messenger /chat .
I have tried and installed this and it seems to work very good once setup.

I don't know but you admins might want to look ?

Also it can be intergrated into your pphpBB : database

here you go http://www.php121.com/

I can see a use for this a quick chat to someone to help or whatever.

I guess it would not hurt to have one for those that would use it but I wouldn't here. I talk to a couple people sometimes and use the yahoo IM but trying to keep up with cam goings on and a chat room and discussion board would be difficult and I do know how to use/read a lot of the chatroom lingo. Refreshing is a pain though :(

But for the moderators sake my vote would have to be no.

OH P.S. Colmaca....Thanks for the link, I may be able to use it :)

Someone started one once apon a time, can't remember who but it didn't last all that long. Nothing against chat rooms but they move too fast for most folks, me included.

Once Upon A Time there was a chat-room which was dedicated to Africam.

There was a shy, reticent, woman, known as Tabatha on the Boma and on Chat, who looked in now and again as she was interested in any chat about wildlife, but who was too intimidated by the obvious freindships between the existing chatters to join in, for a few weeks until...

...eventually, Tabatha accidentally (she had not really explored the chat-site and did not realise that she had done this) sent a pvt message to one of the chatters (Leon/Chameleon) and was surprised :o and shocked  to get a reply.......

Tabatha was encouraged over the next few weeks, by Leon, to not only join in the chat discussions but was also encouraged to attend a 'Meet' in Johannesburg, which was due to occur during her visit to SA in 2000.

Tabatha plucked up the courage to attend the Meet and has never looked back since that time thanks to Leon's persuasiveness, via that chat-room encounter.

Tabatha has even helped to arrange other meets, in Europe, the UK, and even in the USA, since that time and has made so many good, and real, friends around the world over the last 7 years.

Tabatha is now known, to her friends, as Tabs......

Yes, I (Tabs) would like to see a 'new' chat room on Africam because, although I have met a few 'Africam' friends on the Boma, I have made many more via the 'old' chat room.

However, if a chat room is to be introduced on Africam it needs to be Moderated 24/7 by people who not only understand what the chatters want but also have understanding, and knowledge, about young chatters, people who have difficulty with English and those who have other difficulties - whether they are Educational, Physical, Psycological or Behavioural difficulties.

It would aslo need to be 'paid for'? Good chat rooms are not, in general, free of charge. The old Africam chat room was financed by one person (Brian) but I would not expect Africam to finance this on our behalf.

'Free' chat rooms are, generally, not Africam user-freindly as there are no restrictions on membership.
