I noticed two ways to spell Hyena or Hyeana are they both correct? Just wondered if latter is a African spelling.
Thanks, Pete

Hi there,

I wasn't aware of 2 different spellings at all. Growing up in South Africa I have always spelt it Hyena, and so would most South Africans take this as the correct spelling. I asked my brother who is a Game Ranger just outside Kruger Nat. Park and he knew of the other spelling and assumed it was a mistake!
Well you learn something new everyday Eye-wink

Thanks, some one needs to inform Audubon about this as their Field Guide on African Mammals and Birds spells it wrong.
I like the longer version better, it also changes the pronunciation.
