And I saw a grown animal, possibly Hyena, no stumbing, and two pups, not Jackals. Smiling

Well let's see if this works...

I saw the hyena being harassed by two jackals. I don't think those were pups, Smalldog. They kept their distance and kept nipping at the hyena.

Did ya'll see the Hyena come back through with both Jackals still following him? They all came in front of the cam.

Yes, I saw that. They didn't like him being around. It was as if they were trying to escort him off the property.

We're talking about two different events. The large animal and two small pups I saw were not the ones in the video.

Oh, when was that? Must have been just before I got on the cam about an hour and a half ago. Anybody take any pics or video?

Those were the animals in the video that I was talking about. Now that I look at it again, I guess they were not pups. But, the second jackal looked smaller to me than the first one.

Anybody see what was teasing us on the left side of the screen? I looked up and saw something moving but couldnt see what it was and then it barely came back twice but just a tease.

I haven't been able to get in for quite a while, so I fixed dinner and we ate it. Just came back and no trouble. I could hear the jackals from the kitchen.

Looked at the video and I see a hyena gazing across or into the pool. Along comes parent jackal, who is not afraid but gives the hyena a polite distance. Along comes junior jackal, who barely has a lick of sense, and instead of following parent, s/he has to go look across the pool like the hyena is doing. The hyena could have had the little twit for a snack if s/he'd wanted. S/he was interested in something else.

The BB jackal family lives not too far from the small end of the pool, across the little road in the woods (I guess) . They sing from that location all the time and they seem to come and go from there, morning and evening and sometimes in the night. I think they have 3 left of a litter that had at least 4 and maybe 5. They are big enough to not stay in the den any more and tag along to hunt. I think hunting is learned, not genetic.

No, Sungura, I didn't see that part. Sounds unusual, for jackals to harrass a hyena. I did see it leave the WH for a short distance and didn't detect a limp or other sign of illness.

I don't know for sure where they sing from, the mic isn't specific, but I see them go that way and then sing fairly often. I think the kids are driving the parents nuts right now, they run all over and the parents want them home.

I saw 2 jackels harrassing a long hyena last week. I thought it was unsuual also....however they seem to be doing it often, so maybe its not all that unusual.

There must be something we don't know, like jackals taste awful, or they can outrun a hyena? If not, then the jackals like to play Russian roulette!
I suspect a jackal can outrun a hyena, so if he stays just out of reach, he's okay. Well, and I imagine jackals don't taste like chicken, either! Yuck! Isn't it peculiar how lions will kill hyenas, but don't eat them?

My parrot just about jumped out of his pants when he heard that noise just now! What was that?

Bob, did you see Penzi's video on P.3 of this thread? You can see they are jaclkals. They are on the near side of the WH.

Is it possible that what you saw nipping at the hyena's heels were little hyenas? Maybe Mrs. Hyena left her pups and led the jackals away from the pups and was watching them from across the WH?
I'm quite sure they were jackals. Long tails, pointed ears. There was no love between the hyena and these guys. It was all part of the same long interaction, the end of which is captured in Penzi's video. I should have snapped some pics, but I was just sure there were people capturing video. That'll teach me!

Aquila thank you Smiling Just wondering if you happened to get a video of the group of animals that were around the marula tree earlier tonight?

Yep and posted. Smiling Can't figure out what they were Impalas or Lions. LOL

I watched your videos and I counted 13 of whatever they were by the marula tree. That's a lot of lions....so I would put my money on impala.
