Update3: Changed the Hoopoe to seen. Added the Pied Crow. Will add any swallows once there is concensus on the species.

Update2: I've included 5 more birds that were seen and heard dung the last two days.

Update: I've included Landi's three owls.

I've made a quick tally of the birds mentioned on the forum and sofar the list already includes 39 species, with 22 seen, 17 only heard, 35 certain ID's and 4 possible ones! The dates in the list are those of the first time the bird was mentioned, not necessarily when it was first seen or heard.

I've also indicated if the bird was S(een) or H(eard) and whether the poster was C(ertain) of the ID or whether it was (P)ossibly that bird.

Behind the date I've added the scientific and (if different from the current one) old name for easy reference.

Please post any birds I missed or a quick mention of any new birds that reveal themselves before the end of this month so I can add them.

I'll start a new list in October.

Thank you very much

I'm not sure which list that is exactly, and no list is ever going to be final. (E.g. Yellow-billed Kite and Black Kite have been lumped together and YBK is currently a subspecies of BK, but this might change again. Or, in January this year, a vagrant Elegant Tern was seen in Africa for the first time ever and will have to be added at some point.)

But I've posted the current list (which includes the 'old' names for easy comparison) on my website. It can be downloaded from the following link New list (Right-click on the link and the choose "Save link as ..")

Fani

I have had a look at the list and generally most names for South Africa are the new names.

There were a few that I noticed where the names are not the same as our new names - particularly the bustards, where endemic species have retained the name korhaan.

Hope this helps

Can either Landi or Ranger Piet have a look at the mentioned birdlist and help Fani out? When all is checked and correct, will you please forward it to me? Laughing out loud Laughing out loud Laughing out loud

Thank you all for your replies...I can understand that they changed the names for uniformity...But they had to do it only once...I mean to change all names at same time and publish the new checklist...I hope the checklist at birdlife international site is the final... I'm thinking to print it now ...so it's easier to learn the right names...You have so many birds and so many names .... and I hope some day I will come for birding (and not only ) at your beautiful country Laughing out loud

Here in Greece until the middle of '80s many birds had no names at all !!!..But then some scientists from univercities and the Hellenic Ornithological Society...published for first time the checklist with the common names...and all accepted them..Before that we few birdwatchers used the scientific names and until now I prefer them ...So Im sorry if sometimes it easier for me to write them...But at least it helps me to navigate ...through all those names around ..This is the only way to know that your stilt and our stilt is exactly the same bird and the same about hoopoe or common greenshank and many more...as I dont know all common english names too....

Hi Tabs,

I know from personal experience it is a hassle to adapt to the new ones (I had just learned lots of bird names when they were changed and still get them mixed up) but I must agree with Landi, that there is nothing sinister, or commercial, behind the changing of the names. Apart from the consistency matter, there is also a lot of research, based on DNA done since the last time birds were named and classified.

This has resulted in a shift in focus from the 'old-fashioned' classification characteristics like structure, shape, and behaviour to 'modern' ones like gene patterns. In the majority of cases this new evidence supported the old one, but it also resulted in some interesting changes.

E.g. penguins, were originally listed just after ostriches and considered a primitive species because they are flightless. New evidence however indicates that their flightless lifestyle is a very specialised adaptation to an extreme environment and that they are more closely related to amongst other albatrosses and petrels.

Another interesting fact is that it turns out (based on what is known at this point in time) that of all birds the flamingoes are closest related to the ...grebes!

Eventually it will help us to understand the relationship between the different species better and I believe that is worth some relearning. (But then of course I am deep-down still an engineer Eye-wink And the old names are included in the list so you can see what changed into what.
