Why animals do sand baths...(if it is the right word) ...Except ellies I saw wildebeests and zebras lying at ground trying to cover their bodies by sand...Maybe to avoid pests ...Is there any other reason ??
Dust bathe ?
Totally magic.... You' ve aswered from the future 2 October!!!!
Thanks Tabs and Game ranger
The ungulates dust bathe for the same reasons as the others, it's also the best way to scratch that itch... lol
Most animals either sand or mud bathe.
Elephants, rhinos and buffalo in particular like to mud-bathe and they do this to cool their bodies down (the mud acts as a very effective sunscreen) and to get rid of the ticks and mites which plague them - once the mud dries it smothers the parasites.
Birds which do not bathe in water, such as guinea fowl, sand or dirt bathe as part of their preening, to clean their feathers.
I am not sure why ungulates, such as zebras, dust bathe - maybe Wildlifecampus can answer this?
