This is an American Kestrel. It perched on several trees around the park, using the high trees as a spot to hunt from. They take small birds, large insects and small rodents. They are great mousers(catch mice). The Kestrel is 8-11inches(20-28cm) in length and has a 20-24inch(51-61cm) wingspan. It is the smallest of the falcon family which we see. The blue/grey wings tell us the American Kestrel in my photo is a male,so he is in the smaller range of the sizes noted above. Ive seen 639 thus far this fall at my raptor count.

The "Sharpie" or Shin" is 10-14inches(25-36cm)in length and has a 20-28inch(51-71cm) wingspan. It is our smallest hawk and is in the accipiter family, whose characteristics are its relatively long tail, and short rounded wings, which make it agile in woodlands. Their main food is smaller birds. Thus far Ive seen over 1900 Sharpies, and almost all have been as the one pictured,a juvenile. The adults and juveniles migrate separately, and adults are still to come later this month.

On Oct6,the raptor count was slow, but I was fortunate to get a few nice photos. The Redtailed Hawk was coming straight at me when it suddenly flared and hovered briefly. I believe it saw food. The other bird pictured is a juvenile Northern Harrier.

Redtailed Hawk

The Redtailed Hawk is common, but very beautiful. They are a generalist when it comes to eating, meaning they will eat anything, rodents, birds, large insects or snakes. Average size is 22inches(56cm)in length, and a 50inch(127cm) wingspan. Females are considerably larger then males.

Northern Harrier

The Harrier is 17-23inches(43-58cm)tall and has a 38-48inch(97-122cm)wingspan. The Harrier is also a generalist.
The Northern Harrier was also called Marsh Hawk.

Great pics, guys! I'm trying to get some shots of the birds in my yard, but they're very camera shy. They seem to know I have a camera on me no matter how much I try to hide. Oh, well, I'll just keep trying Smiling
