Hey Natascha,

the puma is known by various names...cougar, puma, deer tiger, Mexican lion, mountain screamer, brown tiger, catamount, silver lion, mountain demon, Indian devil, purple feather, king cat, sneak cat, mountain lion and panther. We have both puma and lynx in Canada. Both very beautiful and unique.

The Caracal and Serval were both recently (in the 1990's) re-classified to separate them from the true cats. Both species used to be classed in the true cat Genus of Felis with the specific names of

Felis serval and

Felis caracal

but are now

Leptailurus serval and

Caracal caracal

Both species still retain the Felidae Family though

Thanks! Well then i take it that the Puma is an american cat possibly a cousin or so?!

I can see the similiarity in the Serval and Caracal!

I found those on web Smiling

The Caracal (Caracal caracal) resembles a lynx and for a long time it was considered a close relative of the lynxes. Recent DNA research, however, has shown that the Caracal is not a close relative of lynxes at all, but is instead related to the Serval.

Also

Caracal is a Turkish word meaning "black-eared"

Sometimes this animal is called a desert lynx or an African lynx (lynx is a Greek word !!!)

Hi Natascha,

Lynx, Caracal and Puma are different species. They all belong to the same family (Felidae) and the same subfamily (Felinae) but not the same genus.

As Ceri has already suggested the best way to find out such things is to look up the scientific classification for these animals. It's fast and easy to do on wikipedia.org.

As I have just looked them up, I am posting the scientific classifications here:

Caracal
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Felidae
Subfamily: Felinae
Genus: Caracal
Species: Caracal caracal

Puma
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Felidae
Subfamily: Felinae
Genus: Puma
Species: Puma concolor

Lynx
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Felidae
Subfamily: Felinae
Genus: Lynx
Species: Lynx lynx, Lynx canadensis, Lynx pardinus, Lynx rufus

(So there are 4 different lynx species.)

Easiest is to check the scientific names then you will know and that you can do for everything, birds, animals, even those toads!
