Hi everyone,

I was browsing my picture folders and re-discovered my Kenya pictures. They were taken three years ago, but I thought it would be nice to share some with you anyway Smiling

Wow!  People talk about "seeing pink elephants" (when one has had too much alcoholic beverage), but I have never seen red ones before!  The well water on our farm had a lot of iron content.  We kept a jar of water in the refrigerator and it would leave a rust color deposit on the inside of the glass.  When we were visiting my brother, who lived in Hawaii, his wife was not happy to have us walk in the pineapple fields.  She said the soil stains your clothes.

Wow Ann, thanks for all that information! To us the red soil was simply gorgeous but I guess if you've experienced it like that (like Sherran said earlier) you're not so keen anymore. The amazing thing was that the elephants in Tsavo are red too: as they dust themselves or take a mudbath, the red soil sticks to them making them gorgeously red. After seeing those ellies grey ones seemed utterly boring!

We were lucky to see a very tiny baby:

ETA: I just realised the pictures I posted earlier this evening are too big. Mods; feel free to take them off..

Wonderful pictures, Fabby!  I was intrigued by the red color of the road and soil in one of your first pictures.  I Googled "mineral in red soil Kenya" and found it is the iron content that gives it that color.  We have red soil in places in the US also.  Here in MN there is iron ore mining in the Northern part of the state, but also low grade ore that was mined a few miles from me when I was growing up in SE MN.  I lived on the highway about 3 miles from some of the open pit mining south of me and about 2 miles north of me was a crushing processing plant.  Huge dump trucks used to go by my farm every three minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  They would turn onto the highway about 1/2 mile from me and would be shifting gears right at the end of our driveway.  The plant was closed in 1968.  I also found that Hawaii has red soil that also has the high iron content and saw large pineapple fields planted there.
