Hi to all you africammers  i have followed this site for years but never really got into the message side of things, however i have a question that i hope someone out there may be able to answer

why is it that we see vast herds of wilderbeast, antelopes, birds and other prey but only rarely catch a glimpse of any predators??  i always believed the big cats etc followed any large herd to guarentee a meal but they are so few and far between. yes i have seen hyenas on ir cam at night but only once have i seen lions  is this because it is not a territory of a predator or is it just that they can pick off the prey much easier somewhere else?   i hope the experts amongst you out there can solve this for me

thanks for any info you can provide

Hi Snowbear. Welcome to the Boma. I think what we see here is the way it is. There are many more "general game" critters than predators. Our little window to their world is very limited so the odds are against seeing them there. There are frequent kills in the area that the Rangers report. They just aren't in front of the camera. Hope this helps.

hi donna

thanks for replying to my question....so there are camera shy cats well that makes sense, as long as the ecosystem and biodiversity of species exists to manage species then long live africam and clever people like you who know what others need to find out

thank you

its not so much seeing a live kill its just seeing the lions and leopards/hyenas having a drink or a sleep i know they r generally nocturnal but even at 2am they just never seem to appear was wondering if they even had territory around there but obviously so well keep watching xx  v

Hi Snowbear.  They do visit - yesterday we had a leopard in the afternoon at EP, another at Nkorho in the early evening and, later in the evening, a pride of 8 lions came to drink at Nkorho!
