Purpose of Buddy List

What is the purpose of the Buddy List? Anything special other than having friends?

I don't use the buddylist but read the other day that you can delete those on your list by clicking on them then clicking the delete button or remove from list or some such you should see.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Which makes the 'My Buddylist' a bit of a waste of space here? I also can see no real point to having a Buddylist - apart, that is, from being able to boast of having a large one!

Is there anyway of deleting a buddylist?

I have added some 'buddies' out of curiosity to see what benefits it would bring but as there are no real or apparent benefits is there any point in continuing with it, in it's current format?
