It's great that this mystery got solved finally! A bit surprising solution and it raised in my mind a question: is there other frogs, insects or other animals in South-Africa that have similar sounds as the local birds do?

Hi all, glad to help.

I initially also searched roberts bird sounds.
I knew the sound but couldn't recall what it was.
Then I remebered the frog at my parents house and found the match using the e-frogs programme on my pda.

Interestingly, the recent video posted by sassabuck on the pied wagtails has foam nest frog nests.

They are built over water but not always, I have seen one on the outside of a concrete resevoir in Kruger once.

Thank you Michael! I enjoyed the description of their probable interaction. Morris, I did the same thing. Smiling.

Great stuff Maatjie and Morris, this was most interesting.

Just see how you can be fooled if you are not familiar with the sounds.

Morris, if you don't mind, I'd like to capture this sound and keep it to my database too.

Hi all,

this is the call of the foam nest frog
Chiromantis xerampelina

sounds like either:
- one frog being disturbed by something, or the presence of someone; not sure if this cam is in a hide, the frog may be on the structure itself, and as mentioned is probably close to the mic
- two frogs that are having a dispute as they are resting up too close together, or both are wanting the same resting place

either way the call has a note of aggression

We found one sitting near the back door at my parents house near kruger, and when approached the frog made this call

Kind regards,
Michael

Very interesting! Smiling

I have listened over and over to this sound and it does sound more like the Knobbilled duck. The sounds are very similar if you are not used to hear it and can be very confusing. The Whitebacked night heron would have been great, because it's a new bird for us, but the sound of the Knobbilled is also new.

It must have been very close to the mic, because the sounds on the Roberts CD is taken from a bigger distance, which adds to the confusion.

Any other birds make this sound?

Internet birding can be fun Smiling

After searching a bit myself for the sound,

I asked help to ID this bird from friends and they contacted other birders on the globalbirdtrekkers forum (www.globalbirdtrekkers.org) to help out.

There they say that it could be a Comb Duck as the habitat is not right for the White-backed Night Heron.

The sound of the Comb Duck does sound very similar too and we do get to see them often near the waterhole at NK, so they could be right as well !
