Good day Fani.

The only reason way the warthogs are more seen in front of the lodge is because we water the grass alot.

If you drive around the wh you will see that there is hardly a  place left were  the warthogs haven't dig up. So i think personally the food recourse is also higher in front of the lodge.

That skinny warthog has been a highligh in the past with us with the thought way it is so skinny. After alot of chatting about him the result was that it is an old pig.

Hi Barry

I know Warthogs are omnivores and have been known to nibble on a carcass before but i have never heard of them eating snakes. I will do some research and get back to you. And the pigs in your area are wild boar or warthogs?

Male warthogs sometimes fight each other, charging at one another with manes bristling and lowering their heads to butt each other. They growl and push their opponent to try to make their opponent overbalance. Most fights are just a challenge of strength, but sometimes they inflict terrible injuries on one another.

Vital Statistics

Latin Name : Phacochoerus Aethiopicus

Weight (Female) : 45 - 70 kg  -  99 - 154 POUNDS

Weight (Male) : 60 - 100 kg      - 132 - 220 POUNDS

A full grown warthog can be   120 - 182 CM 4 to 6 feet long    -

SIZE AT SHOULDER    - 76 CM     30 INCH
Gestation Period : 3 months
No of Young : 1 - 8 piglets

She gives birth usually to 2-4 young, although litters of up to 7 have been recorded. As the warthog only has four teats, she has a difficult time if she has to try to feed more than four young.

Sexual Maturity : 18 months
Birth Weight : 600 g  - 21 OUNCE
Order : Artiodactyla
Family : Suidae
Running Speed : 40 km/h         24 MILES PER HOUR

Horns : Tusks average at 25 cm    9.5 INCH

Breeding : September - December.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Names: The adult female is called a sow. The adult male is called a boar. A baby is called a piglet.

Warthogs live in small family groups called sounders.

These consist of a male and female, along with one or

more generations of their offspring

Noname.jpg picture by krukab

Warthogs have dens, which they make under rocks or in burrows, but they tend to sleep and breed in abandoned aadvark dens. These consist of a tunnel leading to a large underground chamber which is ideal for sheltering in and for rearing young. When a warthog family goes into its den, the young enter head-first. One adult always stays outside until the young are safely in the burrow, then shuffles backwards into the burrow's entrance, so that its tusks are always facing any potential predators.

Quick Facts

Size: Stands 30 inches at the shoulder
Weight: 120 to 250 pounds.

Habitat: Found in moist and arid savannas avoiding deserts and high mountains.

Diet: Grazer; Mainly a grazer the warthog has an interesting practice of kneeling on its calloused, hairy, padded knees to eat short grass. Using its snout and tusks, it also digs for bulbs, tubers and roots

and  insects but warthogs are also known to occasionally

eat   small mammal - birds and reptiles -

As the warthog's eyes are set very high and well back on its forehead,

it is able to keep a look out for predators even when feeding.

Lifespan: 15 years.

Predators:

The warthog has many predators  in the African wild  leopards lions   cheetahs and  cocodiles but the human is one of the main  predatorsof the warthog as they have hunted warthogs not just for their meat, but also for the ivory that is found in the tusks of the warthog.
