We keep seeing a young black rhino with a large scar or cut on its left shoulder. Does anyone know how that wound occurred or how long the rhino has had it?

Thank You Janine!
It is something you will see on each and every black rhino it’s a scar from a parasite called filaria it only attacks black rhino and they mostly have several of these marks on their skin these marks stay with them for life. This is also a method for us to id the various rhino, as no two rhino has the marks on the same place. (This is how you will know it’s a black rhino if you not sure when looking at it, as it does not attack the white rhino) It does not seem to negatively affect the rhino, this parasite has been around for time in memorial, it is the lavae of a mosquito which lays its eggs under the rhino's skin.
