Thanks Hanneke. Rest well!! Looks like they fixed a nice long finger at EP. Should provide some good sightings when the critters find out about it.

It will be interesting to see the larger animals in the water as it looked at dawn when I was watching the start of water being added and some final grading being done, it looked like it has a shallow end to the left and it is much deeper (looked about 4-5 ft) in the center and right area toward the tree island.  I also found out that the inlet isn't from the area to the far left as I had thought before but was from the area on this side of the pan about center of this side.  I remember it had been noticed long ago about a cement block being seen in that area.

hi  - i was counting loader trips the last couple of nights

and with that being a 1.5 yard bucket( i think)

as i used to run a machine with a 2.5 yard bucket

I WOULD SAY THE BACKHOE HAS A  1.5 YARD BUCKET

FOR 1.5 HOURS IT MADE A TRIP EVERY 5 MINUTES

i counted  24 trips last night in a row by the loader

1.5 yard bucket  nk aug 13  2009

just looking at the pictures that were posted and the comment of it seemed like they smelled the water and the impalas were lining up to get to the fresh water when they were filling it again... I hope the elephants forget that it was empty last week and will return Eye-wink

I doubt that the waterhole is big enough, but hope that  the making it deeper will entice more hippos to at least stop by for a nice deep bath if not take up residency.  Baboons stiring at EP now.. hoep something coming that we can see.

last year a zoomi or ranger at e.p

told me that the water was pumped from the river

and the river is at the right end of the e.p. pan

he or she also said the river was 15 meters from the pan

but that is not the right distance from what i have seen

one photo from the air -  it looks more like

300 feet if that is the dry river bed to left

in this photo

the water hole is 60 feet from the cam tree

so 200 feet ?? to the dry river bed

Roughly 20 metres from the waterhole is a large Jackalberry tree. Fortunately for us it houses a large branch extending completely parallel to the ground, with nothing between it and the bush.

They certainly had the ideal time to work on the NK waterhole and I wish they had at least made it deep enough so the gucks could swim, instead of walking across it.

If they dredged NK I'm sure they would find bones.  We have seen hyena take "things" in there many times.

Hi Mavis!!  I wonder if the aminals would be more constant if NK were deeper and larger.  Sure would be fun.

I hope that maybe they will  put the dragon stick back or at least closer to the water so birds will perch there also.   What ever is to the right of the new perch (I vote for the name trident for that myself) looks like a critter so with they could remove it too since I keep thinking something is there lol.

Maybe we'll have to see if EP starts attracting more animals.  NK used to be much deeper and I would really love to see at least part of it deeper again.

Barry I see in your day by day sightings you have what the starling and the sandpiper were.. was those id's fairly sure?  I couldn't tell by the pic and the pic didn't say.  I didn't add those on the sightings log but will with those id's if they are correct.

eta:  I didn't put in the fork tailed drongo either.  On your list you are missing the word "zebra" most animals in a day I think for our lists , great day of sightings Smiling

I saw my first vervet at EP about a month ago, but haven't seen one drink.

I've been lost in that thread for almost an hour now :-o  I'm not sure about that sandpiper.  It has a shoulder crescent that is fairly visible that would make it a common sandpiper, but I think we can ask the rangers or bushie.  There is a lilac breasted roller also in yesterday's pics.  What a great day!
