Hello again Cool

In a month or so, a friend of mine is leaving for South Africa. She will write a report there on differences in HIV education between literate and iliterate people. Obviously, she will need to unwind from time to time! So I thought I'd ask you guys here for some tips I can present her with at her leaving-party Smiling (copywrited to you, naturally Eye-wink )

She will be living in Stellenbosch for about 4 months, with some days off. She will also have a 4 week leave during which time she would like to travel around the country with three friends.

I hope I can get some tips here, thanks in advance for your help Laughing out loud

If you are going to be near Johannesburg for a while and want to see some wildlife, I would definitly recommend Welgevonden Game private game reserve which is just over an hour north of Jo'burg - 55 000 hectares, with all of the Big 5 and much more to see. I have worked on the reserve before so am a little biased, but for it's locality to Jo'burg I think it is hard to beat

Hope this helps

She can also go to St Lucia-Cape Vidal. Can do a lot of bird watching and also snorkel and scuba dive.

And there is the beautiful Drakensberg area in KZN as well with plenty of accommodation - various price ranges as well.

There is a 'must see, must visit' place on the west coast of South Africa, no more than 3.5 hours drive from Capetown.

It is the 'Beach Camp' at Paternoster - they offer very cheap tented accomodation (with comfortable beds, showers etc) , great walks, birding, swimming, kayaking, fishing etc... and the bar/food prices are unbelievebly affordable - or you can bring your own food and use their BBQ facilities.

I was there for a weekend in August 2006, with the Cape Leopard Trust, and I was so happy with the camp, the staff, the birding walks and the facilities that I can't wait to go back one day!

There is a lot to see in SA. 4 weeks are not enough.

My suggestion is a trip along the coast from Cape Town to Kwazulu Natal, then through Swaziland to Kruger National Park and the Lowveld.
There are many places that are worth visiting on or near the coast. I would choose Tsitsikamma National Park (beautiful scenery!), Addo Elephant National Park and maybe Knysna.
When she gets further north east, she should consider getting away from the Coast to visit the Drakensberg Mountains near Lesotho. Then back to the coast and on to Durban and some of the parks north of Durban like Hluhluwe Imfolozi and the St. Lucia Wetlands. (see this map of KZN)
From there the shortest way to Kruger is through Swaziland. Enter Kruger at one of the Southern Gates (Crocodile Bridge or Malelane) and travel North through Kruger.
Other great places to visit in this area are the private reserves in Greater Kruger, for example Nkorho and Elephant Plains. After leaving the Kruger area and going west she could visit the "Panorama Route" with its beautiful waterfalls, viewpoints and the Blyde River Canyon.
From there it's only a few hundred km to Johannesburg.

This schedule should keep her busy for at least 4 weeks. She would miss out on the beautiful North West of the country with parks like Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Augrabies. But that's a bit more remote and more difficult to travel in, so it could be the destination for another trip.

    I hope that helps.

After writing all this, I want to go too... :D

    Day trips from Stellenbosch

    • Cape Town: I can recommend a visit to Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was in prison for many years), Table Mountain and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
    • The Cape Peninsular: beautiful scenery; best parts in my opinion are Boulders Beach near Simon's Town where you can get close to a Penguin colony and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. A walk to the nice viewpoints at Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. It's possible to see some wildlife there. The baboons at the Cape Point car park are very naughty!
    • Hermanus (on the coast south east of Stellenbosch): a great place to watch Southern Right Wales from the land. The whales are in the Bay for calfing from July to November.
    • West Coast National Park: on the coast north of Cape Town. I have never been there but heard that it's very beautiful.
