Tman, I think most of the lionesses had walked away when the hyenas got so brave. The hyenas seemed to back off a bit when some of the lionesses returned. But you are right, they just kind of showed themselves without actually joining in to help the lone lioness. No one ever said the Styx girls are very nice. LOL I read once where one of the old lionesses of the pride died while on a kill. No one knows if she died from the take down of the kill or possibly aggression during the feast but what the rangers did noticed was.... the rest of the pride just left her without showing any noticeable concern over it.

Tman if it had just been found there prob would have been a big fight for the buff, but by this time there wasn't much left to fight over.

Something else I found interesting was at first I thought it was just the one lioness vs 5 or 6 hyenas... it wasn't till later in the video you see that there were like 7 or so more  lionesses there that didn't seem to come to the defense of the lioness that the hyenas were pestering.  I would have thought they would have been more helpful to a pride member but then maybe they knew that she could handle it herself ok and were upset that she was holding up the exit to enjoy rest and digestion time.

It was very exciting Tman! Seems hyenas have a lot less respect for lionesses than they do for male lions. If I'm not mistaken, there were two males reported with the Styx that day and were said to possibly be a couple of the Mapogos. Hyenas are probably lucky the boys didn't take offense to them annoying the girls.

Thanks for reposting this video.  That was before I started watching the cams and was sure interesting to see the hyenas being so brave against the lioness like that.  Not to mention the bravery of the person going out  and wiping off the rain drops off the cam cover during all the activities around them.  Fantastic sighting and video capture. tyvm Africam and Aquila.

I was really slow to respond to Marbelhead's request but dinner was awaiting me.

I love the vocalizations in the buff carcass vid. Liked it too when the styx girl got a piece of one of the annoying hyenas. Glad though no one was really hurt in that tussle.
