NEW DAY!  Don't forget to use EP or NK on your posts about sightings.

A note to all.  Campbell was at EP today, working on the IR lighting in hopes of improving the nighttime viewing.  It would appear that he has had some success.  He's also planning on moving the microphone to cut down on the background noise.

He'll be back at EP tomorrow, then on to NK, tomorrow night.

Thanks for the update RogerH, EP looks great - it would be great to get rid of that background hum in EP - fingers crossed he has some joy.. What is his plan for NK do you know? Will Campbell be spreading out the IR light so we can see the right hand side of the WH better? It was fun listening to the familiar accent when they were working on the camera in EP today - was hoping for a wave and a smile to all the Africammers around the globe Sad he was working too hard!

Bye Janice!

Hi Izabella!  Welcome to Africam!  Yes, part of the plan is to make some adjustments to the IR lighting, as well as trying to back off the camera's "home" position, such that we can see the entire water hole.  That would make my day!!

You could see his shadow long before he got up in the tree.

I thought that was a jacal that went across from left to right but wasn't sure could not see the ears very well. but then no glasses on didn't help.

Just an FYI... that back ground noise at EP is their air conditioning/circulating unit. Don't think they can get rid of that noise fully, maybe move the mic some so it won't be as loud. Thought I would share what I have learned over time too.

LOL KeeKee, at first I thought you were talking about a leopard in the Marula tree, and thought, "darn, how did I miss that?", then realized you meant Campbell at EP!

Are there any birders out there?  At night I've heard, I assume, a bird that sounds like a "tin whistle".. Not real loud but a high pitched "tweeeeee" followed by a shorter one.  I've checked the sounds but not found this one yet.  Anyone know what it is?

rattiecat - I'm no birder, but I think I've heard it said that that is a scops owl.  But not sure.

Hi Karen.  Think you're probably right about not being able to totally get rid of the air conditioner noise.

I'm off to get my dinner.  Be back later.

Thanks for the info Karen. holy cow, its a noisy thing!! it sounds like its much closer than the buildings - eek! hopefully Campbell the mastermind will figure a way to point the mic in a different direction to reduce its pickup of the A/C unit.. pity its so loud.

Hahha.....Thanks, Cowboy. Now I'll know in the future how to go about it for this forum, won't I? Sticking out tongue

What confused me is....I'm a moderator at a pixel forum and we use BBcode for everything....images, text, links, etc. Copying/pasting links works there as well. Figured it would here too so still scratching my head over that one. Oh well, as long as I've finally "got'er done". I hate to appear a nimrod :-D

Common duiker just did a walk through.

Someone asked in the Q & A thread if other herbivores (apart from the hippo) sometimes eat meat.  The common duiker sometimes will take nesting birds, lizards and even small mammals.

scientific accounts that we have that hippos do sometimes eat meat. A pdf file announcing the Dudley’s work, states that not only was carnivory witnessed among the hippos, but even cannibalism, the strange habits of the studied group perhaps contributing to an anthrax outbreak that ended up killing 300 hippos in the area.

http://laelaps.wordpress.com/2007/08/07/carnivorous-hippos/

Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, observed a male hippo killing an impala ram that had swum through a pond to evade a wild dog. After eating some of the meat, the hippo returned to his herd.

A few minutes Later, ten more individuals from the group gathered at the floating carcass for a communal feast. Later a few of them climbed the pond’s banks to wrest another dead impala from wild dogs.
