Managed a few screen shots of a swallow. Any idea what it is? This was today Feb 12.

Sorry for taking so long to answer, but I was away today.

Maybe it's best to stick to the ID of the lodge and leave it as a White-throated swallow. They are closer and it's easier for them to ID birds. The pics are not really that clear.

I think it might be a Sand Martin.  It is in my Roberts Bird Guide for the Kruger National Park and adjacent lowveld so should be in the area and looks a lot like the bird in these pics.

Hi Twofour, I mailed Nk lodge and here is their answer,

It would not be a Banded Martin as we do not get them around in this area, and the martin is smaller than a White-throated Swallow. The white-throated swallow is common around in this area and I would say it is a swallow than a martin.

I hope that helps you, but just so everybody know, I still don't think it's a white-throated swallow.

Keep the questions coming, Smiling

Thanks guys. Feel free to send my 'pics' along as you see fit, thanks for asking.

Thanks also for the link. Im still learning where to find things and that area is one that I would be interested in seeing! Thanks for pointing the way.

Cheers

Nice question. I see it is already ID'd as a white-throated swallow, but I'm not so sure as that one has a rufous patch between the eyes. In my book it says the juvenile of the wt swallow lacks the rufous patch.

Then I looked at the Banded martin, which has conspicious white eyebrows and in these pics this bird shows a more whitish colouring there.

I'm going to borrow your pics and ask which swallow/martin this is, ok?

Nice captures!

hi, we also have a daily picture thread where people post pictures from the cams.  Todays thread can be found HERE.

There is pictures posted there too now that have it also as the white throated swallow.  Todays pics I think are even better then the ones we had gotten before for our sightings database.  Please feel free to post pictures in the daily pics thread of the sightings you see since many like myself miss many of the sightings and love to see what we missed.
