How well do you know your poop?  Here's a little quiz for the over active minds.  See if you can be the first to identify the pictures of scat of various animals that are seen on the Africam streaming cams.  Let's try one at a time and go from there.  We can start with an easy one.  Are you ready?

All right Sabine, I'll go ahead and guess Ellie.  I am probably way out in left field but we'll see.  This could be fun.

Rofl and YUK Lea! Embarassed

Ellie dung to be sure, a few days old at least (no steam coming up!!!) because it has been dried out a bit by the sun.

Hang on whilst I stick my finger in to test it......yep, it's not very fresh and it tastes like female ellie dung!

(ever been caught out by that trick on a Game Drive?)

Who "dung" it #1:  Elephant

Here's a few elephant dung facts:

  • The approximately 250kg food eaten every day passes through 18m of intestines. Eventually processed into about 100kg of elephant dung per day.
  • Elephants only digest about 40% of what they eat, and therefore, they need to spend two-thirds of every day eating.
  • An elephant 'releases' 2000 litres of methane gas per day!
  • Some countries even re-cycle elephant dung into elephant dung paper.  Shocked

#2 hint:

it is not from a rhino, however, like the rhino, it does come from an odd-toed ungulate.

This looks, to me, very like the dung that is passed by Equus burchelli - Burchell's Zebra - which is the common species of Zebra in the lowveldt in South Africa, which includes the greater Kruger Park area.

Yes, zebra have hooves, which makes them an 'ungulate' (hooved animal) They are, in fact, odd-toed unglulates - which means that they have either one or three toes.

Zebras have one toe (their hoof) whereas, for example, bufallo's are even-toed ungulates because their hooves are split in two.

Who "dung" it #2:  Zebra

Here's a few Burchell's Zebra facts:

  • they are mainly grazers, but sometimes browers during the dry season.
  • herds are usually one stallion and a small group of mares or a bachelor herd.
  • females in the herd follow a hierarchial system, the dominant mare is always in the lead.
  • burchell's zebras are the only species with shadow stripes on their rumps.
