Well people of africam its about time we played some guessing games as it has been a while so here is one for you!

I am the most succsesful mamal predator in africa however i am one of the most rarest. I communicate by making chirp noises something you would not associate with me. One of my favourite prey is Impala but I will hunt anything. What could I possibly be?

Correct janine and penny..

It is true Wild dogs do have one of the best hunting % in africa... will check but my magazine sayd 44% next to cheetah at 38% might be higher i am not sure.

They make chrips when stalking as to not allow the prey to be scared. This makes the prey think that a flock of birds is approaching not a pack of dogs...

next one wil be posted soon

watch this space Eye-wink

Hi Dan - this is a good quiz.  Could it be a wild dog?

This predeator will only make these chirpings when hunting as too not alarm prey that it is coming, it confuses the prey by sounding like a flock of birds instead of an enemy...

There is one more who cherps and chatters and squeaks and squeals and makes high pitched noises you would not expect it to make Eye-wink keep thinking lol

The only predator that I can think of that makes a 'chirping' noise, similar to a bird, is a cheetah.

If the answer is cheetah you have some of your facts wrong...

Whilst the cheetah's favourite prey is probably Impala, in Southern Africa at least, they are actually regarded as being the least successful of the major predators in Africa which is partially why they are on the endangered list. This is due not only to their being often 'robbed' of their prey by more successful predators such as lions and hyaenas, but also due to their being regarded as 'vermin' by farmers, and shot on sight.

They will also not hunt 'anything' as they are not strong enough to hunt larger prey such as Giraffe, Kudu, buffalo, zebra etc.. unless they are fortunate enough to catch a calf whilst the adults are not close by or aware.

Lions will hunt adult giraffe, buffalo etc and even adult elephant - as well as smaller prey animals - if they have the right conditions (enough pride members for example) so surely they are the most successful predators in Africa? However, lions do not 'chirp'!

The only other candidates for being the prime predator are the leopard, the spotted hyaena and wild dogs - but whilst leopards hunt many prey animals that lions do not (such as fish and birds) they cannot take down the larger mammals, hyaenas are very efficient hunters of small - medium mammals but again cannot hunt 'anything' and wild dogs are very persistant in hunting down small - large antelope but none of them 'chirp' apart from the (relatively inefficient) cheetah.

Cool
