Sorry for this extremely disjointed post..... Sad

Last night I was skimming the Djuma thread and saw where someone was defragging their hard drive every day. I meant to post last night about it....but got side-tracked and forgot. Today it popped back into my head...

I forget who it was that posted they were having trouble and was defragging every day, but defragging at that rate is not necessary and is actually counter-productive. It lessens the life-span of the hard drive and every time defrag runs, there is a chance of data loss. The chance is extremely minor, but naturally...the more you do it, the better the chances become. Defragging is more important for older operating systems like win98 and winME, but XP uses a much better file system (NTFS) and doesn't require defrag as much. There are no rules, but a good guide is this.

Average user surfing and not installing and uninstalling much can likely get away with defragging once or twice a month or if noticeable slowing is observed. Power-users who like to install things and then rip them out alot...once a week. Is defragging everyday dangerous? No...not really...but it doesn't help either.

Sorry I can't remember who this was meant for...but hope someone will know. Then again...I was drinking last night, so maybe I read it at another forum or imagined it entirely. Laughing out loud

Maxx it was Owls, she said her computer was taking 11 minutes to boot. I was working with her to get a lot of cr_p out of start up and mentioned that even though she had spyware and antivirus software, she may be infected and that is what was causing her major slowness. She PM'd me and told me she made some changes, but I do not know how much better it is now.

11 minutes....WOW. When mine gets over 45 seconds...I start ripping out start programs....

Lea was just telling me that her virus scan was taking 10 hours on her MAC. Whatever is happening to people's machines....it sure is a time-waster too.
